Study findings reported in the Journal of Gerontology (Medical Sciences) conclude that older adults who attend religious services at least once a week appear to have a survival advantage over those attending services less frequently.

According to a study published in the Journal of Gerontology (Medical Sciences), a lack of private religious activity predicts a 47% greater risk of dying. This study is one of the first to show an association between private religious activities and longer survival in certain population subgroups.

A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine indicates that elderly patients who struggle with their faith are at an increased risk of death compared to those who feel more confident in their beliefs. Authors of the study credited religious turmoil in part with increased stress that negatively impacted the immune systems of those less concrete in their beliefs

According to a summation of physical and mental health studies by Harold Koenig, M.D., Center for the Study of Religion/ Spirituality and Health, Duke University Medical Center, greater religious involvement has been associated with lower blood pressure, fewer strokes and deaths from heart disease, lower mortality after heart surgery and greater survival and better health in general. Studies also found that people who are more religious experience greater wellbeing and life satisfaction, and less depression and anxiety.

A study by researchers at the national Institute for Healthcare Research published in the International Journal of Psychiatry in Medicine in 1999 shows that people who attended a religious service once a week and prayed or studied the Bible once a day were 40% less likely to have high blood pressure than those who didn’t.
